Holy Week 2014 in Patzcuaro

During Holy Week 2014 in Patzcuaro, there are a lot of activities to enjoy, including our traditions, culture, folk art, and or delicious cuisine.

The activities begin April 11, beginning with “Altars of Pain” in and about Patzcuaro.

Palm Sunday in Patzcuaro is a true event of tradition.  It’s an emotional experience to see the streets full of palm leaves, and the faithful crowding the temples on this important day.

We at Hotel Mansion Iturbe participate with our own Altar of Pain.  La Casa de los Once Patios has their version, and there is always a lovely Virgin next to the Mayor’s office in the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga.

This week – April 12 -20 this year – is always important for the local artisans.  Their 300-or-so stalls take up the perimeter of the huge Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, just across the street from Hotel Mansion Iturbe.

This year it is also an extention of the famous Uruapan’s Palm Sunday Fair, increasing the variety even more than it already is.

All week long, here will be cultural events in the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, including various live concerts.

Maundy (Holy) Thursday is an important day of the week to visit the Seven Temples, and a reenactment of the Last Supper in the atrium of the Parroquia in Colonia Ibarra.

The Procession of the Christs takes place on Good Friday.  These Christs are absolute gems of colonial Mexican art, made of corn paste (of which the Virgen de la Salud in the Basílica is also made), which is a centuries-old technique used by the indigenous.

Saturday, April 19, is another event you shouldn’t miss:  The Procession in Silence.  It leaves the Templo de San Francisco and proceeds through the main streets of our Pueblo Mágico.

Other towns you may want to visit during this time of year are Tzintzuntzan and another Pueblo Mágico, Santa Clara del Cobre.
